He was born in Keokuk, Iowa to Mary Inez Holmes and Mervin Lesley Holmes on October 25, 1940. He served our country in the United States Navy, including a tour in Vietnam, as a radioman. He worked for Santa Fe Railroad as a switchman in Barstow, California. He retired from his work as an Amtrak Conductor for the San Diego to Los Angeles Commuter Train Line after 24 years of dedicated service.
He loved sports, especially baseball and hockey. He had an obsession with old cars, including his 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V and later in life, his Volkswagen Beetles.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Mervin Lesley “Snooks” Holmes.
His two beloved daughters survive him, Kimberly James in San Diego, California, and Sampaguita Tafoya in Sacramento, California. Additionally he is survived by his son-in-law, Alex Tafoya, and his grandchildren, Alyssa Tafoya and Colton Tafoya, in Sacramento, California, along with multiple nieces and nephews in the Midwest.
In honor of his wishes, he will be laid to rest with a private burial at sea.
