Drinking From My Saucer

I've never made a fortune

Pray, don't find fault with the man that limps or stumbles along the road. 

 Unless you have worn the shoes he wears or struggled beneath his load.

There may be tacks in his shoes that hurt, though hidden away from view. Or the burden he bears placed on your back, might cause you to stumble too.

Don't sneer at the man who's down today unless you have felt the blow, that caused his fall or felt the shame that only the fallen know.

You may be strong but still the blows that was his if dealt to you, in the selfsame way, at the selfsame time might cause you to stagger too.

Don't be too harsh with the man that sins or pelt him with word or stone. Unless you are sure -yea, doubly sure- that you have no sins of your own.

For you know, perhaps, if the tempter's voice should whisper as soft to you, as it did to him when he went astray it might cause you to falter too.

Daddy,
Thank you for being an example to us!  It is a true blessing to have two parents that demonstrated such a deep love for each other and unconditional love for their children.  You instilled deep family values that influence us every day.  You always supported our interests and choices.  Your legacy of faith lives on in each of us, and you taught us to keep our focus on Christ.  You lived your live well before the Lord, your family, your friends, and the community!  May we follow in your footsteps!

So many pleasant memories of cousin Roy! I miss the days when we were younger, and we all got together on a regular basis. He loved his family and friends so much, and is such a fine Christian man.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.  We wish we could be there.  We loved Roy, he was a great man and a lot of fun to be with.  Our love is with you all.

Roy and Becky Startup were some of the first folk Ann and I met upon moving to Nashville in the early '80's. We always said if everyone at First Baptist Donelson was as friendly and nice as the Startup family it was a church we wanted to be a part of. So we joined. Mrs. Becky, Ann and I offer our deepest condolences to you and your family during this season of grief over Roy's passing from this life into the nearer presence of the Lord. Our prayers are that God will ease the burden of the grief your are experiencing over Mr. Roy's passing.

I worked with Mr. Startup at Metropolitan Federal for 4 years and he was a pleasure to work with.  He was a man to be respected and we all loved him dearly. He had great customer service with all the customers there.  He was a good example of what a Christian should be.  I have not seen him in a while but thought of him often and remember him as an outstanding person. I will remember you all in my prayers.

Dear Roy: You are going to be missed so much by so many.  Just looking at the photo gallary proves what a wonderful family you have.  They are all gathered today to pay honor to your memory.  Larry and I were so blessed to share so many memories and occasions with you and Becky.  We are blessed to have Jimmy as our favorite son-in-law.   We have shared many great times with Jimmy, Kim , Matthew , Stephen and Tim.  You were not only the meat market man, banker, husband, father, granddad, and great granddad, but a friend to so many.  You were a fine Christian man and that reflects in the faces of your entire family.  Your legacy will live on now that you are in God's loving arms.  We will see you again. Mr. Roy was such a special man - a wonderful Christian first and also a great banker.  Roy Startup will be missed so much by his friends and colleagues.  Sincerest thoughts to Becky & family.

I was a friend of Buddy's back in Shoney's days. I'm sorry for your loss, Buddy. My condolences to you and others in your dad's family.

The entire Startup Family at First Baptist Church Donelson was an inspiration and an encouragement to my family. The many kindnesses extended to my dear Grandmother,Beulah Maynard, will never be forgotten. My prayers are with you all.

I hold really great memories for a great man!  My mind swiftly goes back to the many summers I traveled to Nashville with my parents, Kenneth and Maurine, my brother, Kenny and later brother, Greg; to the 4th of July reunion. We stayed with my Uncle Ed and Aunt Neva.  We spent time at your place; playing and taking photos. My words are futile.  Becky, Jimmy,  Buddy, Susan and your entire extended family, I offer you my continuous prayers from now through this new journey set before all of you.

Roy and I worked together at Home Federal for several years.  He was always a joy to be around and treated his customers fairly. He will be missed by many friends.

I have only fond memories of my cousin Roy.  I enjoyed our conversations down memory lane.  He and his father made me feel welcome during the Saturdays I spent with my dad at Startup Brothers' Meat Market as a teenager.  His loving Christian attitude has always been an inspiration to me.
