CAMMACK, William Howard (“Bill”), Age 90, of Nashville, died on February 20, 2020. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Eugenia Hecker Cammack; son William Howard (Ward) Cammack Jr. of Nashville (Shelley); granddaughters: Julia Wallace Cammack, Alice Laird Bell, Julia Meriwether Bell, and Ward Witt Cammack; sister Mary Virginia Cammack Wilson (Alexander E. III) of St. Augustine, Florida; and loved one Lucie Wallace Cammack. He is preceded in death by his parents, William Henry Cammack and Anna Howard Cammack, and by granddaughter Martha Locke Cammack.
Bill was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, where he attended the public schools. Upon graduation from Vanderbilt University in 1952, where he was a member of the Beta Theta Pi social fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa honorary fraternity, he served on active duty as an officer of the U.S. Naval Reserve. After release from active duty, he joined the investment banking firm of Equitable Securities Corporation in Nashville in 1955. Upon the merger of Equitable Securities Corporation with the American Express Company in 1968, he was named Senior Vice President and Director of Equitable Securities Morton & Co., the investment banking arm of American Express Company. In 1972, he headed a group that reestablished Equitable Securities Corporation as an independent investment banking firm, of which he served as Chairman and President. He was also Chairman of Equitable Trust Company, an affiliate of the re-established Equitable Securities Corporation. In 1998, Equitable Securities Corporation merged with the investment affiliate of SunTrust Banks to form SunTrust Equitable Securities Corporation, of which he served as Chairman. In 2002, he headed a group that purchased Equitable Trust Company from SunTrust Banks and established it as an independent trust company, where he continued to serve as Chairman. A consummate and dedicated professional, he continued in his role at Equitable Trust Company until the time of his death. He previously served as a board member of Tennessee Natural Resources, Inc. (Nashville Gas Company) and General Shale Products Corporation, both public companies, and as a Member of the New York Stock Exchange, Inc.
Bill was an active member of the Nashville and Middle Tennessee communities throughout his adult life. His past volunteer and civic endeavors included tenures as Chairman of Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc., Trustee of the Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc. Trust, Director of Cumberland Region Tomorrow, Chairman of Richland Place, Inc., Member of the Committee of Visitors for George Peabody College, Founding President of the Vanderbilt University College Cabinet, Member of the Board of Visitors for the College of Arts and Science at Vanderbilt University, Member of the Advisory Board for the Junior League of Nashville and Trustee of the Junior League of Nashville Endowment, Trustee of the Ensworth School, Chairman of the Associates Board of St. Thomas Hospital, Trustee of United Way for Metropolitan Nashville and Davidson County, Board Member of the Nashville Mental Health Center, Member of the Board of Governors for the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce, Trustee of the Episcopal Endowment Fund, and Director of the Region Solid Waste Board (Davidson County). Additionally, he was active in alumni and fundraising affairs for Vanderbilt University and a member of Belle Meade Country Club. He was a communicant of St. George’s Episcopal Church.
Bill enjoyed traveling around the world with his wife, Jeanie. However, he was never happier than when spending time on their farm in Hickman County, Tennessee. He will be remembered by all who knew him for his sharp mind, strong work ethic, and immense dedication to the people and institutions he loved.
A graveside service will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1101 Lebanon Pike, Nashville, Tennessee 37210. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Belle Meade County Club, 815 Belle Meade Boulevard, Nashville, Tennessee 37205. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nashville Humane Association, 213 Oceola Avenue, Nashville, Tennessee 37209, or Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, 937 Herman Street, Nashville, Tennessee 37208.
