Walter Franklin Evans, Sr. passed away on April 26, 2016, at the age of 97. Frank was born in Louisville, KY, to the late Walter B. Evans and Margaret Franklin Evans. He was raised by his late aunt and uncle, Winnie Franklin Harlin and Alex F. Harlin. He is also preceded in death by his wives, Betty Quarles Evans, who he married in 1946, and Grace G. Grissom, who he married in 2000; along with his son-in-law, Donald Mundy. He is survived by his five children: Mariwyn Evans; Walter Franklin “Frank” Evans, Jr. (Margaret); William A. Evans (Karen); Janet E. Butler (William); and Karen E. Mundy.
After serving as a colonel in the Army Air Corp during World War II, Frank spent most of his career with Red Kap Inc., which was the largest manufacturer of uniforms in the United States at the time. For the last 15 years of his career, he served as Red Kap’s president. Frank was also active in industry trade groups including: the National Cotton Council, the Southern Garment Manufacturers Association, and the American Apparel Manufacturing Association for which he served as president in 1967. After his retirement, Frank was a state director of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives). He also served on the Finance and Planning Committees at his church, Christ United Methodist in Franklin, TN.
An avid golfer, Frank was a member of Richland Country Club for over 60 years, as well as Hillwood Country Club. He was a 33rd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite. An intrepid traveler, he had visited more than 100 countries. He was a graduate of The Woodbury Forest School in Orange, VA, and Vanderbilt University.
Funeral services will be held at Christ United Methodist on Friday, April 29 at eleven o’clock in the morning with visitation preceding the service at ten o’clock. Interment to follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to ‘Rooftop Nashville’ or ‘The Center for Living and Learning’ in Franklin.
