Wallace Estill Wilson of Nashville departed this world peacefully on September 16, 2021. He had many dear friends, some who knew him as Wallace and others who called him Estill. To his family, he was Estill or the beloved Uncle “Es”. Estill was born on July 8, 1935, approximately 30 minutes prior to his twin brother, Larry. The fraternal twins spent their childhood idolizing their older brother, Buford, while roaming the streets, playing fields and fishing holes of Green Hills and Belle Meade.
After graduating from Montgomery Bell Academy, Estill earned a degree in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt in 1957, where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and served as a manager for the football team. A lifelong Commodore, Estill loved retelling stories of his trip to the 1955 Gator Bowl, Vanderbilt’s first-ever postseason bowl game appearance and victory against Auburn. After graduation, Estill continued his Civil Engineering studies, earning his masters degree from Lehigh University, where he was a Gotschall scholar, and his doctorate from Georgia Tech, where he taught and assisted in research on civil engineering uses of nuclear explosives.
A lifelong professor, Estill began his professional career at Vanderbilt and UT-Nashville. For over 30 years, he was affiliated with Nashville State, where he helped establish programs in architecture, building construction and civil engineering. In 2016, Estill received a Lifetime Achievement award from Nashville State, and scholarships were established in his honor. Throughout his life and in retirement, Estill was a passionate supporter of MBA and Vandy sports teams, attending almost every home football game, and numerous basketball and baseball contests in each season.
