Born December 3, 1943 in Kingsport, TN to Victor Joseph McDonald, Sr and Mary Estelle Owen. He was raised in Chattanooga, TN and graduated Notre Dame Catholic High School in 1961.
Vic attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville on an Air Force ROTC scholarship, where he met Ethel Quinn. They bonded over sharing the same nickname, “Butch.” Vic and Ethel married in Kingsport after his graduation in 1964.
He served in the Air Force from 1964-1977 and achieved the rank of Captain; over the years he was stationed in San Antonio, TX, Clear, AK, and Tachikawa, Japan. He and Ethel returned to the States from Japan for their final assignment in Fort Walton Beach, FL where their daughter was born. After he was honorably discharged from the Air Force, the family relocated to Oak Ridge, TN and lived there for over 15 years.
Ethel died from complications of cystic fibrosis in 1992; he met his second wife Paula Cohen Rosenblatt about a year later and they married and settled in Memphis, TN in 1994.
But the warm climate and beaches of Florida kept calling him back; he and Paula moved to the Tampa Bay area in 1999 and stayed until declining health called them back to Tennessee. They moved to the Nashville area to be closer to Paula’s son David.
He was a self-proclaimed computer geek and sci-fi fan. He had a lovely baritone voice and would often break into song if a lyric occurred to him. He loved his family, his dogs, old-time rock and roll, and doing various construction projects around the house.
He is predeceased by a still-born son, Ross McDonald, and his first wife, Ethel.
He is survived by his wife Paula (Carthage, TN), daughter, Kathryn Devine (Olympia, WA), step-sons Michael (Eads, TN) and David Rosenblatt (Nashville, TN) and step-daughter Amy Pickler (Germantown, TN).
No funeral is planned at this time due to COVID-19 restrictions on travel and in-person gatherings. Half his ashes will be interred in St. Stephens Episcopal Church Memorial Garden in Oak Ridge, TN with Ethel and the other half are planned to be interred with Paula at The Temple in Nashville after her death.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
