Thomas Ivo Carlton Jr. was born May 3, 1937, in Nashville, Tennessee, and died on April 22, 2023, surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Ivo Carlton Sr. and Felicia (Roache) Carlton. He is survived by his wife Kathleen (Rowan) Carlton, sister Mary Catherine (Ken) Choyce, daughter Katie (Frank “Wish”) Long, son Thomas Ivo (Ellen) Carlton III, step-children Joby Saad, Jonathan Saad, Suzette Ervin, Sabra (Sheyn) Love, grandchildren Caroline Long, Christina Long, Ashley Ruth Long, Gracyn Carlton, Reilyn Carlton, Brenyn Carlton, step-grandchildren Sonny Saad, Anna Saad, Joseph Saad, Colleen Love, and Rowan Love, nephew Ken (Carmen) Choyce, and nieces Karen Choyce and Marianne (James) Greaney.
After attending Cathedral Grade School, Tom graduated from Father Ryan High School in 1955. He attended Vanderbilt University in 1955 and graduated in 1960 where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He graduated from The Nashville School of Law in 1965 where he later instructed Moot Court. Tom was a Senior Metropolitan Attorney for the Metropolitan Government of Nashville from 1965-1970 and then became an Associate at Cornelius, Collins, Higgins & White from 1970-1974. He became a partner at Cornelius & Collins in 1975 where he practiced law until retiring in 2022. He was an active member of the American, Tennessee, and Nashville Bar Associations.
Tom was a man of integrity and honor. He was a friend to all that knew him. His greatest joy in life was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. His passion was the law, and he was proud to represent his clients while teaching and mentoring many fellow attorneys. He loved to tell stories, travel, and most especially, be with his grandchildren. He was a lifelong Catholic and true to his faith.
Visitation was held on Friday, April 28. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, April 29, with a visitation prior. All services were held at Saint Henry Church, 6401 Harding Road, Nashville, TN 37205.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Father Ryan High School (700 Norwood Dr, Nashville, TN 37204) or The Nashville School of Law.
Eternal Rest grant unto him Oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
