Stephen Kenneth Rush passed away peacefully on July 22, 2021 after suffering complications from a fall at his home in Nashville, TN. Steve will be remembered as an intelligent, kind, loving husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Born in Columbus, IN, in 1942, where he spent his early childhood before his family moved to Whittier, CA, and finally Nashville, TN, where he graduated from Battle Ground Academy in 1960. Steve later received a BS and MS both in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. In college he designed the “Pogo-Prop”, a one man hands-free underwater pogo stick that can propel a person 2.5 miles per hour for at least an hour. While at Stanford University, Steve met his future wife, Nancy Royse Burns. They married in Beverly Hills in 1965 and were married for over 50 years.
Following college, Steve was commissioned in the US Navy. He became a Lieutenant on the new hybrid deep submergence rescue vehicle (DSRV) called the Avalon. You can still see the Avalon at The Morro Bay Maritime Museum. After his service in the Navy, Steve, Nancy, and their two small children moved to Nashville, TN, where he attended Vanderbilt Law School. He practiced law for the remainder of his life and especially enjoyed working in international affairs, music and copyright law. Steve loved current affairs, playing bridge, traveling, and his church groups.
Steve is preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, brother, Phillip, and parents Kenneth Elva Rush and Henrietta Jane Boyle Rush. He is survived by his son Jeff and his wife Tonya, daughter Stephanie and her husband Michael Spears, and his beloved grandchildren Archer and Lauren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, July 31, 2021, at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home with Inurnment to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to Woodmont Christian Church, 3601 Hillsboro Pike, Nashville, TN 37215.
