A native of Middlesboro, KY and member of the Sisters of Mercy for 68 years. Sister died Feb. 26, 2017 at Mercy Convent, Nashville. She was 102 years old.
As a young woman Frances Teresa Kilcoyne worked in the business office of the Blue Diamond Coal Company in Knoxville, and entered the Sisters of Mercy in September 1949 at the age of 34 and became Sister Mary Placide Kilcoyne.
After professing her vows in 1952, Sister served at St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital, Knoxville, for 18 years as controller and then as assistant administrator in charge of finance. In 1971 she was called to serve as the treasurer of the Sisters of Mercy, Province of Cincinnati, with administrative responsibility for community sponsored ministries. She returned to Knoxville in 1989 using her financial expertise as internal auditor until her retirement to Mercy Convent, Nashville, in 2006.
Sister was highly respected for her business acumen and wisdom, abilities which were instrumental in preserving the financial viability of the community and its hospital ministry.
Sister Placide was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Frances; her sisters; and her brother. Sister is survived by her nephew Patrick Kilcoyne; other family members, and members of her religious community.
Visitation will take place March 2 at 10:30 a.m. at Mercy Convent, 2629 Pennington Bend Road, Nashville; Funeral Mass will be at 1:00 p.m. at Mercy Convent followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery, Nashville, TN.
