Sara Jane Jones was born on April 29, 1930 in Johnson City, Tennessee, the daughter of Henrietta Jane Lawson Crumley and Cecil Joe Crumley. Sara Jane graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, in Medical Records Administration and Stephens College, Columbia, MO, with a Bachelor of Arts. She was the Director of Medical Records and Quality Assurance at Bristol Memorial Hospital (Bristol, TN), Johnston Memorial Hospital (Abingdon, VA), and St. Thomas Hospital (Nashville, TN, 1982-1991). She also taught Medical Coding and Transcription at Nashville State Tech Community College for many years beginning in 1995.
Sara Jane was very devoted to her family, church, and many friends. She always loved her hometown, Johnson City, TN, and her treasured friends from Science Hill High School. She was intelligent and gregarious, and she rarely met a stranger. Although she was small in stature, she was fiercely independent and strong, defying the odds by surviving cancer twice and a heart attack. Her wit and intelligence never failed her. She often told her children what to do, even from her hospital bed. Of the many descriptions about what an extraordinary person she was, a few people said, “kind, extremely outgoing, never met a stranger, believed that she was here in life to do what she could do for others, devoted to her students.” She made friends wherever she went.
Red was Sara Jane’s favorite color. Everyone who knew her knew that! Some family and friends will be wearing red to her service to honor her.
Sara Jane is preceded in death by her parents Henrietta and Cecil Crumley, her husband T.C. Jones, her brother Dr. Joe Cecil Crumley, and a nephew, Joe Crumley. Survivors include her very special friend, Dr. Frank Glascock, her daughters Rev. Jane Taylor and Kay Taylor Hume (David), her sister Dr. Martha Jean Bratton (Sam), her aunt Mary Louise Lawson Trammell, her grandson Andrew William Nelson (Bree), her granddaughter Dr. Sarah Katherine Nelson Coffey (John), her great-granddaughters, Avery, Elliot, and Drew Nelson. Other surviving family include her niece Sarah Bratton Brengle (Rob), her nephew Matthew Bratton, great-niece Emory Kate Brengle and great-nephew Sam Brengle, a special family member Eric Taylor and his family, two special friends Martha Clement and Jo-Leah Wallace Tilbury.
