Robert Farrell Owens

Farrell is preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Laura Lankford Owens. He is survived by daughters Paige (David) Patton and Ashley (Drew) Thomas, grandchildren Charlotte and Foster Patton, former wife Kim Ezell Owens, and sisters Peggy (Bob) Loggins, Linda Ogg and Janice Cannady.

Farrell was a graduate of Cohn High School (class of 1963) and David Lipscomb College (class of 1968), where he was an outstanding baseball player. After graduation he was a high school baseball coach, teacher and summer league coach. His passion for baseball soon led him to become general manager and original part-owner of the Nashville Sounds. He later worked for Purity Dairies and started a baseball newspaper in 1989 called The Sandlotter to promote amateur baseball in the greater Nashville area.

Farrell served on the board of the Cohn High Alumni Association and the Nashville Old Timers Baseball Association. He also served on the advisory board for Music City Baseball, an organization committed to bringing major league baseball to Nashville. He was a member of the Nashville Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame and the Lipscomb University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Farrell loved his family more than anything and his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. His warm friendly presence will be greatly missed by his family, countless friends and at ball parks throughout middle Tennessee.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a drive-through visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 24 from 12-3pm at Lipscomb University. Guests will be asked to enter the campus from Belmont Blvd. and then will be directed from there. Guests will be asked to remain in their cars as they drive by and speak with the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lipscomb University Baseball in memory of Farrell Owens or to a charity of your choice.
