Nina Nellrena Carr, age 84, of Nashville, Tennessee passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. She was born on August 14, 1939, in Roanoke, VA to Blanche Rose Ella Miller and Edwin Raynard Jewell. She is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Ronald Dean Carr; her son, Wendyll Dean Carr; and daughter, Martha Gayle Carr Hughes Steely (RT). She is survived by a sister, Rozella Bower, who resides in New Jersey; two grandsons, Justin Hughes (Dana) and Colin Hughes (Rose); and two great grandsons, former daughter-in-law, Sherry Carr McArthur. She is also survived by 3 nieces, Leisel Bower, Kristen Bower (Brian), Dory Bower (Glenn), brother-in law Ricky Carr (Theresa) and sister-in-law Pam Tritley (Bill).
Nellrena's journey of faith began when she accepted Christ at age five. She and her husband joined Crievewood Baptist Church in Nashville in 1965. She was a longtime member of the Sanctuary Choir, handbell Choir and WMU. She was devoted to her church family.
Nellrena met her husband while in high School. She began her college career at Duke University while Ron was in active duty in the Army. She left Duke and they married in 1957. Over the years they lived in Georgia, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina and eventually they settled in Nashville, Tennessee. Nellrena completed her college career some years later graduating from Vanderbilt Peabody in 1974. She began student teaching music at McGavock High School and then taught at Whites Creek High School, where they started their first handbell education class. Nellrena passed along her love for music to both of her children.
She was a longtime member of Cheekwood and the Frist Art Center and loved attending the Symphony. She and Ron loved to travel. Their adventures took them to all but three states. They also traveled to Europe, Canada and Russia.
Ron and Nellrena built a home in Crieve Hall and lived there until Ron's death when she moved to Franklin at the Manor at Steeplechase.
A gathering of family & friends for Nina will be held Monday, February 26, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Crievewood Baptist Church, 480 Hogan Rd, Nashville, TN 37220. A celebration of life will occur Monday, February 26, 2024 at 12:00 PM, 480 Hogan Rd, Nashville, TN 37220. A committal service will occur Monday, February 26, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 660 Thompson Ln, Nashville, TN 37204.
