Milton W. Smith, Jr, born July 27, 1942, passed peacefully on October 27, 2021. Milton, known affectionately to his many friends as “Bubba,” was preceded in death by his father, Milton W. Smith, Sr, his mother, Mary Macon Smith, and his sister, Ann Smith Parker. He is survived by his nephews, Alex Parker and Christopher Parker, and his nieces, Malissa P. Forry, and Carrie Parker-Peery, as well as many cousins.
Milton attended Parmer School and Montgomery Bell Academy where he was an outstanding athlete, excelling in football and basketball. He attended Vanderbilt University where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity, and Vanderbilt School of Law where he was a member of the Vanderbilt Law Review.
His legal career was diverse, including private law practice, counsel for the Tennessee Dept. of Safety, owning his own title insurance company, Colonial Title Company, and as an attorney in the legal department of Dollar General Corporation.
Milton's writing skills, combined with his wonderful sense of humor, kept his friends entertained through the years.
Bubba's love of, and participation in, sports continued throughout his life. He was a hard-hitting, slick-fielding third baseman for the legendary Diamond Dusters slow-pitch softball team, and he was always ready to join pick-up football and basketball games. For many years he held season tickets to Vandy football and basketball games.
Milton loved listening to music, making his own mix CDs, enjoying a vodka drink at cocktail hour, dancing with all of his lady friends, and just spending time with his many friends. A booth at Whitfield's, later Noelle, The Robert Redford/Milton Smith Booth, was adorned with a plaque in his honor. He especially loved the times he spent at Shangri-La Cottage in Laguna Beach, FL.
Friends of Bubba are invited to gather to celebrate his life at the home of Charles Trabue and Jane Vandeventer, 101 Fox Hunt Pt, Nashville, Tennessee, 37221, on Thursday, November 11 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Milton's name to the charity of your choice.
