On the autumn morning of October 30, 1945 Mary Catherine Hittinger was born at St. Thomas Hospital. She was the first child of Tenny Mae Stuart and William Hittinger. Two other girls were added to the family later, Betty and Ann.
Mary attended Mt. View School and Antioch High School for twelve years of perfect attendance. The “perfect” applies not only to attendance but describes who Mary was. After graduating, she worked at Keith Simmons, Martha White, Vanderbilt Law School, and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Association.
On August 30, 1994 Mary attended her 30th class reunion where she connected with classmate Eddy Nichols and less than six months later, they married and moved to Maryland for seven years. It was there that she fulfilled a life-long wish of doing mission work for people from other countries while she and Eddy operated a Haitian store where she excelled in loving and caring for the needs of “her people”.
Mary and Eddy enjoyed several years together and traveled to the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico for vacations, even after receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer. It was two years later that she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She fought valiantly for nineteen years before finally relinquishing her hold on life.
