Lorene Marie Koonts Ferree was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on March 29, 1917, and died on October 29, 2023 at the age of 106. She was preceded in death by her parents, John A. Koonts and Annie Sue Warner Koonts of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Nashville, Tennessee; by her husband of forty-eight (48) years, Reverend Sulon G. Ferree, who served for twenty-five (25) years as a staff member on the Methodist Board of Discipleship in Nashville; and by her sister Genny Koonts Cottrell and husband Rufus H. Cottrell of Nashville.
Lorene graduated in the class of 1938 from High Point Methodist University, North Carolina and, for a time, taught school in North Carolina. She was a faithful member of West End United Methodist Church in Nashville for more than sixty (60) years, a charter member of the Methodist Women, the Upper Room Sunday School Class, and the Scarritt Aid Women’s Club. She and her husband spent many summers at the Methodist Assembly Ground at their Lake Junaluska, North Carolina home.
Lorene is survived by two sons- Reverend John Ferree and his wife Anne of lake Junaluka, North Carolina and David Ferree of Nashville, Tennessee. Survivors also include grandchildren Matthew Ferree and his wife Kara of Nashville, Tennessee. Elizabeth Anne Cox and her husband Chris of Nashville and Mary Catherine Hedrick and husband Adam of Wake-Forest North Carolina. Great grandchildren are Jim and Liam Cox Sloane and Nolan Ferree, and Mackenley and Hadly Hedrick. She is also survived by her niece Anne Cottrell Clough and her husband Ron Clough of Huntsville, Alabama and by her nephew Robert Cottrell and his wife Marilyn Cottrell of Litchfield, South Carolina. In addition, she is survived by many great nieces and nephews.
A service of resurrection was held in the chapel of West End United Methodist Church in Nashville on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 11:00am, with a visitation with the family starting at 10:30am. A service of interment was held on Saturday, Nov. 11, at 3:00pm at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
