Lee Ann Allen Hawkins passed away peacefully on April 1, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. Affectionately known as Mama Hawk, Muzzie and Granmuzzie, Lee Ann was born on September 25, 1934 to Howard Lee Allen and Lucille Jeffords Allen in Nashville. As the daughter of Montgomery Bell Academy’s legendary head football coach , Lee Ann grew up on the campus of MBA. She attended Woodmont School, Ward Belmont, and graduated from Hillsboro High School. Lee Ann attended Vanderbilt University where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority until she left to marry her high school sweetheart, Charlie Hawkins, a former player of her father’s. Upon their marriage in 1956, she joined Charlie in Norfolk , VA to complete his service in the Navy.
They moved back to Nashville to raise their family. Lee Ann was deeply devoted to her children, grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews. Lee Ann pursued her love of art and enrolled in Watkins College of Art, graduating magna cum laude with a focus on print making in 2005. Lee Ann was a member of the Sow and Grow Garden Club, the Centennial Club, and a long time member of Woodmont Christian Church. Lee Ann’s creativity knew no bounds. She chaired the Trees of Christmas at Cheekwood and the Centennial Club Christmas Luncheon, was “Trooper the Clown” at the Nashville Children’s Theater, and was a master seamstress, flower arranger, and collector of recipes. Lee Ann was an amazing artist and made everything around her more beautiful. She loved to travel, was a life long learner, a wildly creative hostess who loved to throw a party, and one of Vanderbilt Athletic’s biggest fans. She loved cheering on Tim Corbin and the Vandy Boys, collecting shells on her beloved Sanibel Island, and was a fierce competitor in Rummikub. She had a natural ability to befriend people of all ages. She loved pranks and jokes and had a wonderful laugh. She will be remembered as a strong and courageous woman who faced life with style and grace. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Lee Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Charles Winstead Hawkins III; her parents Howard Lee Allen and Lucille Jeffords Allen; her sisters Julia Allen Calton and Susan (Jinx) Allen Read; Great granddaughter, Mary Eleanor “Noor” Vanasten. She is survived by her children Leslie Hawkins Benny (Paul), Mary Jeffords Hawkins, William Howard Hawkins (Elizabeth), and Julia Ann Hawkins; her grandchildren MaryAllen Corbett Vanasten (Jelle), Caroline Elizabeth Hawkins, Charles Winstead Hawkins IV, Paul Robert Benny Jr., and Eliza Grace Hawkins; her great grandchildren Fenne and Ada Vanasten. She is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to her many caregivers and supporters.
A celebration of Lee Ann’s extraordinary life will be held on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at 11AM at Woodmont Christian Church followed by visitation with family and friends at Belle Meade Country Club from 4:30PM - 6:30PM.
