Kay Frances Hager, a remarkable woman who was the rock of her family, passed away peacefully at her home in Nashville, Tennessee, on Monday, December 9, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family and friends. She was 73 years old.
Kay was born on March 11, 1951, in Cowan, Tennessee, “to the late” William and Laura (French) Harper. From a young age, she embodied a spirit of joy and resilience, growing up alongside her siblings, playing softball and riding bikes, and adventuring until the streetlights signaled the day’s end.
In 1972, Kay met the love of her life, Leland Dale Hager Sr., on a blind date in Nashville. They were married on December 28, 1974, at St. Edward Catholic Church and began a life together that was steadfast and faithful through every season of life.
A devoted Catholic, Kay lived out her faith with humility and generosity, embodying Acts 20:35: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Her compassion and grace touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She was a loving wife, mother, nana, sister, aunt, and friend who brightened every room she entered with her radiant smile and infectious warmth.
Kay worked as an exceptional workers’ compensation adjuster for Tennessee Risk Management, where her diligence and dedication earned the respect and admiration of her colleagues. Outside of her professional life, she loved playing cards, tennis, listening to music, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends.
Kay is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, Leland Dale Hager Sr.; her daughter, Temple (Nicky) Steenkamp (Warren); her son, Leland (Lee) Dale Hager II (Amanda); “the late” Russel (Rusty) Hager; and her cherished grandchildren, Grace Owens (Jameson), Audrey Privett, Keegan Privett, Heidi Privett, Trenton Hager, Liam Steenkamp, and Warren Steenkamp II, great granddaughter Evelyn Rae Owens. She is also survived by her loving siblings, the late William (Bill) Harper (Theresa), Lynn Ford (Alex), Sandy Walsh (Ed), Leo Harper (Melanie), and Tim Harper (Robin); and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were like family.
Kay’s legacy of compassion, faith, and love will continue to inspire those who knew her. Although she is no longer with us, her spirit will forever live in the hearts of her loved ones.
Visitation and funeral arrangements will be held at Marshall- Donnelly- Combs on Thursday, 12/19/24 from 4-8pm and St. Edwards Catholic Church on 12/20/24 at 10am. The funeral service will begin at 11am, followed by the burial at Calvary, and then a reception at St. Edwards. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in her memory.
Rest in peace, Kay, knowing that your love, light, and legacy will endure forever.
