He was born in Nashville in 1934 and attended Duncan Preparatory School. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1955 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity including time as Treasurer. He served his country in the U.S. Army in 1957; he worked for Phillips Petroleum in Oklahoma until he returned to Nashville in 1962 to work for the Department of Transportation of the State of Tennessee (Right of Way), where he was employed for nearly 50 years. He finally retired in 2011 at the age of 77.
He was a member of Belmont United Methodist Church for many years and more recently a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
He is the son of George Ward and Emma Nowlin Payne. He is preceded in death by his twin brother Jack Payne and brother Tommy Payne.
He was devoted to his wife of 57 years, Maida Moore Payne. He is survived by her as well as his daughter Caroline Payne Hendricks, son Samuel Donelson Payne (Deborah), grandchildren Taylor, Joey and Sarah Elizabeth Hendricks and Julia and Walker Payne, all of Nashville. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held at Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a graveside service to follow at 2:30 p.m. at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, Belmont United Methodist Church or Alive Hospice.
