John Howard Tipton, Jr. passed away in Nashville TN on September 26, 2019. He was born November 9, 1926 in Chattanooga TN to John H. Tipton, Sr. and Blanche Viall Tipton. He grew up in Nashville and graduated from West End High School.
Following military service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Mr. Tipton attended Vanderbilt University where he graduated in 1950 as an Electrical Engineer. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta social fraternity and a member of Tau Beta Pi and ODK honorary societies.
Following graduation, Mr. Tipton was employed by The National Life and Accident Insurance Company Mortgage Loan Department and retired 32 years later as Vice Chairman of NLT Corporation. While always in Investment Operations, he served in other positions – Chairman of the Building Committee for Opryland USA, President of The National Life and Accident Insurance Company and Vice Chairman of NLT Corporation.
He was a member and Elder of First Presbyterian Church, member and past President of the Belle Meade Country Club, and a member of the 100 Club of Nashville.
He is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Ann Tipton Horn, and sister Virginia Tipton Craig. He is survived by his wife Frances Adams Tipton; daughters Frannie Smith (Larry) and Ginger Walker (Will); son-in-law Stephen E. Horn; grandchildren Katherine Arney (Drew), Ginnie Wilkerson (Michael), Tipton Horn (Casey), Ann Briggs Montross (Billy), John Walker, and William Walker; and 5 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held in Cheek House at First Presbyterian Church on Monday, September 30 from 10-11, followed by the Service of Witness to the Resurrection in Stanford Chapel.
