Joe David Crumpacker

Joe David Crumpacker, age 91, of Nashville, Tennessee, died on Wednesday, December 21, 2022. Joe was born September 13, 1931 on the family farm near Pollack, Sullivan County, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Janette Louise Bohlken Crumpacker, and his parents, Dandridge Purdy Crumpacker and Vera Fern Border Crumpacker. He is survived by his daughters, Amy Newby (Scott) of Knoxville, TN, Carol Garfield (Dailey Kennedy) of Brentwood, TN, Janice Crumpacker of Nashville, TN, and Dina Beier (Kevin) of Culleoka, TN; and by seven grandchildren, Joseph S. Newby, Paul D. Newby (Kristen), Christopher J. Garfield, Nicholas F. Beier, David H. Beier, Katherine L. Beier, and Benjamin H. Beier. He is also survived by his siblings, Bruce Crumpacker (Karen) of Imperial, MO, Joyce Ayers of Green City, MO, and Don Crumpacker (Jo) of Venice, FL.

Joe was a graduate of Milan High School and earned a BS in Agriculture and a MS in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Missouri, Columbia. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1957, resigning his commission as a reserve Major in 1971.

Joe worked with the Tennessee Baptist Convention in various capacities from 1957 to 1967. During those years he most enjoyed supervising BSU student volunteers in the construction of churches in small Tennessee communities and elsewhere.

Joe joined the architectural firm of Earl Swensson Associates, Inc., Nashville, TN, in 1967. In 1976 he was appointed ESa’s Vice President of Finance, a position he held until he retired in his 80s. He cherished the relationships developed there and was proud to have contributed to ESa’s legacy.

In earlier days, Joe enjoyed camping, canoeing, and hiking. He was a life-long bird and nature enthusiast and was involved in many local conservation efforts. Joe and Janette created a loving and very close-knit family, the highlight of every year being a large three-generation gathering at the beach. They also shared a love of their horses, reading history, and traveling together for genealogical research.

A private service was held for the immediate family at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home, Thompson Lane, Nashville.
