Eleanor “Joan” Smith Jones, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 8, 2021. Joan was born May 29, 1928 in Nashville, Tennessee to the late Albert Forrest Smith and Daisy Myers Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Horton Adolphus Jones, Jr. and her siblings Rita Smith Petsch, Albert Forrest Smith, Jr., Donald Hayes Smith, Russell Monroe Smith, Garland Perry Smith, and Gordon Hamilton Smith.
Joan was employed by National Life and Accident Insurance Company after graduating from West High School. She met Horton, “Doc,” at Teen Town, and they married after he graduated from the University of Tennessee Pharmacy School. She was an active and engaged member of our Nashville community whether serving as President of the Ladies Drug Auxiliary or volunteering for the Salvation Army. She was a life-long member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and an Honorary Lifetime member of Richland Country Club where she won the Ladies Golf Championship. Joan also loved to play tennis and played with her friends in the Charlotte-Pearl Tennis group and NALTA for years. She was a sports enthusiast and loved watching and talking about sports of any kind, especially UT and Vanderbilt athletics. She attended every one of her children’s and grandchildren’s events without fail. Joan loved to cook a delicious meal to share with family, and she loved to work the daily crossword puzzle. Her generous spirit, strong integrity and passion for family has been passed down to her children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her children Jennifer Layne Dover (Mike), Horton Leslie Jones (Mary Jayne), Jeffrey Gordon Jones (Brenda Freeman) and JoAnna Jones Howe, her 4 grandchildren, Horton Allen Jones (Ally), David Avent Howe Jr. (Sara), Leland Michael Howe (Alison), Mary Joan Jones (Josh Murphy), and a great granddaughter, Lena Belle Jones.
Also survived by her brother Bob Dudley Smith (Jeanne) and her sister Kay Smith Adamson and many beloved nieces and nephews and friends.
