SMITH, Dr. Jay J. , age 82, of Nashville,TN left this world to go be with his Lord on the 13th of November 2012 surrounded by his entire family. Dr. Smith is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Jane Toothman Smith; children Janet Sexton (Garry), Sandra Smith, Jon Mark Smith (Jessica), Donna Seger (Dan), Thomas Jay Smith (Kellie), and Karen Adele Sipes (Kevin); grandchildren, Amanda, Carrie, Jamie, Elisa, Brittan, Christian, Kaity, Riley, and Reece; and great-grandchildren Wiatt, Courtlin, and Oscar. He is also survived by his brother, William Charles Smith (Janie) of Independence, WV. Jay was born to the late Jay I. Smith and Goldie Ellen Scritchfield Smith in Reedsville, West Virginia on the 6th of May 1930 and graduated from Fairmont State College and University of New Mexico before receiving his Ph.D from Vanderbilt University. He was the owner-operator of Jay Smith World Travel for over 35 years. Jay enjoyed leading tours to the Holy Lands and traveling to distant countries. At last count, Jay had visited 67 countries. During this time, Jay held the title of President, and then Director of ASTA for 8 years. Jay worked as editor-in-chief of 20th Century Christian for 15 years, and owned Family Christian Book Club. Jay was noted author of several religious books. He was minister for 55 years working with different congregations; Grandview, Goodlettsville, Shackle Island, University, Harpeth Hills and finally at Forrest Hills Church of Christ for 28 years. Dr. Smith was a noted speaker for the radio show "Power for the Day" which was heard on 145 Christian radio stations across the country. A Celebration of Life service to honor Jay's life and legacy will be conducted at Woodlawn’s Dignity Hall at eleven-thirty Thursday morning, the 15th of November 2012 with Minister Walt Leaver officiating. Interment to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Those honored to serve as Casket Bearers will be Jon Mark Smith, Thomas Jay Smith, Garry Sexton, Dan Seger, Kevin Sipes, and Christian Smith. Honorable pallbearers will include Mike Labo and Rob Robinson. Friends are cordially invited to attend a visitation with the family today between the hours of four o'clock until nine o'clock this evening; and again one hour immediately prior to the service time on Thursday morning.
