James Robert Kellam III. Born August 2, 1938 in Nashville, TN. Preceded in death by wife, Gwynn Hastings Kellam, parents, Elsie Somerville and James R. Kellam, Jr., and mother-in-law Mary Margaret Hastings. Survived by stepchildren Clay Bradley (Sara) and children John and Grace of Nashville, TN; Leigh Jankiv and children Joshua (Ashley), Elijah (Rebecca) and Emma, and three great-grandchildren all of Grimsby,Canada; brother-in-law Keith Hastings of San Francisco and numerous devoted cousins across the country.
Educated at Woodmont School and Montgomery Bell Academy where he was varsity tennis letterman two years and Vanderbilt University where he served as Secretary of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Mr. Kellam began his banking career at Commerce Union Bank (now Bank of America) by working six summers during high school and college. Upon graduating from Vanderbilt in 1960, he started full time with the bank as a management trainee. After his 32 year career with the bank, during which time he graduated from the School of Bank of Public Relations and Marketing at Northwestern University, Mr. Kellam retired in 1994 as Vice President in the Private Banking Group of NationsBank, a successor of Commerce Union Bank and now Bank of America. During his banking career and afterwards in retirement, Mr. Kellam was actively involved in many civic and charitable causes such as the Nashville Symphony, the American Cancer Society, the Heart Fund, Family and Children’s Service, United Way, Montgomery Bell Academy Alumni Association where he was a member of the James Robertson Society and Vanderbilt University Alumni Association where he had served as class chairman, decade chairman, Vanderbilt Invitational Tournament chairman, Board member of the National Commodore Club and several reunion committees. He was a former member of National Academy of the Recording Arts and Sciences, Country Music Association, Nashville Entertainment Association, Gospel Music Association and former Board member of the Tennessee Film Commission and W.O. Smith Community School. Mr. Kellam was also a member of Richland Country Club.
He was a Charter Communicant of St. George’s Episcopal Church where visitation at 10:30 a.m. and memorial service at 12:00 p.m. will be held on Monday, December 29, 2014. Cremains will be interred next to his wife at the Columbarium of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, St. George’s Episcopal Church or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
