Dr. James Hugh Haynes of Brentwood, Tennessee, passed away on March 28, 2024 at Vanderbilt University Hospital. He was born in Union City, Tennessee, on October 25, 1935 to William Booker Haynes and Josephine Jessica Patterson.
He was a graduate of Mount Airy High School in Mount Airy, North Carolina, The University of Tennessee-Knoxville and Duke University Medical School, Durham, North Carolina.
He married Mary Alice Templeton in Chattanooga who survives him. He was a Chemical Engineer and a Doctor of Medicine specializing in pulmonary medicine. He was employed by Combustion Engineering in Chattanooga, Aerojet Rocketdyne in Rancho Cordova, California and Fiber Industries in Salisbury, North Carolina. He did his internship, residency and fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical School joining the practice with Dr. Gerald Halprin, Dr. Brevard Haynes, Dr. Bobby Miller and Dr. Eric Dyer. He was also Medical Director for Respiratory Students at Vol State Community College and adjunct professor at Vanderbilt University Medical School and served several hospitals in Middle Tennessee.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons James Lawrence (Valentine) Haynes, Boynton Beach, Florida; Charles Phillip Haynes (Steve) Nashville; daughters Charlotte Heath, Smyrna, Tennessee and Jennifer (Donnie) Chinander, Columbia, Tennessee, and grandchildren Brittany Heath, Jacob Chinander, Rheanna Heath, Amber Chinander, Kathryn Chinander, Luke Chinander, Thomas (Danielle) Haynes and Jordan Haynes.
Visitation for Dr. Haynes family will be at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home, 660 Thompson Lane, Nashville, Tennessee 37204 on Saturday, April 6, 2024 from 2:00-4:00 with services following at 4:00. The family would like to thank Dr. Benjamin Womack and the entire staff of Vanderbilt Medical Center for the exceptional care he received.
Memorial donations in honor of Dr. Haynes may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, American Lung Association or an organization of your choice.
