Age 73, passed away, Thursday, September 18, 2014. He was preceded in death by his father, James F. Harwell and mother, Ella Parker Harwell. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jane R. Harwell; daughters, Ashley Harwell Smith and Ginny (Robert) Nichols; sister, Celeste (Bob) Pittman; grandchildren, Jack, Sam and Ben Smith and Lynlee Nichols and many more extended family members. He spent his entire professional life in the insurance industry. In 1975 he co-founded Thornton & Harwell Agency which was later sold to BB&T Insurance Services. David Lipscomb and Youth Encouragement Services were two of the many charities Jim supported with great passion. He was also on the board of directors for many local schools and associations and was a member of Richland Country Club, The Golf Club of Tennessee and Burnt Pine Golf Club in Sandestin, Florida. He loved playing golf and sports in general. He was a long-time fan of Vanderbilt University sports and the Chicago Cubs. He graduated from David Lipscomb High School and David Lipscomb College where he excelled at baseball and basketball. He was very outgoing and never met a stranger. Jim will be missed. The following will serve as pallbearers: Chance Allen, Bob Anderson, Fred Fisher, Larry Hasty, Bruce Pittman and Rob Pittman with Ed Thornton and Bob Pittman serving as honorary pallbearers and James Vandiver officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation at Mount Olivet Funeral Home, Sunday, September 21, 2014, from 2 pm – 6 pm and Monday, September 22, 2014, from 1 pm – 2 pm followed by the funeral service at 2 pm in the chapel.
