Gloria Louise Cherry Maxwell, age 95 , went home to be with her Lord on, Thursday, December 21, 2023, after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Nashville on April 9, 1928, the only daughter of Col. James McEwen Cherry and Louise Tompkins Cherry. Gloria was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joe E. Maxwell, both of her parents, her brothers, James M. Cherry and Robert T. Cherry, and her grandson Dillon Ray Haselton. She is survived by her four children: Lisa Louise Haselton Jones (Richard), Gloria Gail Haselton, John Hall Haselton (Bambi), and James Russell Haselton, as well as her eleven grandchildren: Rachel C. Jones (Chris), Gloria Rebekah Jones, Laura E. Jones, Jonathan D. Jones, Krystle H. Clinton (Justin), Erica H. Baggett (Josh), J. Alexander Haselton, T. Elliott Haselton, Emily A. Haselton, T. Grace Stephen (Jake), and her great-grandchildren: Arthur E. Crimmins, Judah E. Crimmins, Christopher Clark, Sean Newsome, Lydia Forsyth , Justin Clinton, Lilly Haselton and Hall Baggett, and great-great-grandson Atticus Clark. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Joan L. Cherry, a nephew, Robert T. Cherry, Jr. and a niece, Palmer Cherry Duffey, four great-nephews and two great-nieces.
She was a graduate of Hillsboro High School, Ward-Belmont College for Women and Vanderbilt University where she was a member of the Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority. Following her college years she worked at the Davidson County Department of Welfare and later for Drs. Henry Bracken and Henry Bracken, Jr., psychiatrists, until she left to raise her family. As a young mother she was a member of the Florence Crittenden Junior Board and Singing Hills Garden Club. She taught Sunday School at Harpeth Heights Baptist Church. In 1975 she married Joe E Maxwell, joining him as partner in his newly, formed multiple association management firm serving as administrative assistant, computer accountant and insurance claims administrator for several state associations. In her childhood and teen years she enjoyed horseback riding at the “Castle”, her family home on Estes Road, and swimming at Willow Plunge in Franklin, TN, the home of her ancestors. In her twenties, pre-children, she taught ballroom dancing, and in her thirties and forties she raised Siberian Huskies. In her latter years she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, growing her African violets and delivering "Meals on Wheels” for which she received a commendation from President George W. Bush. She attended Forest Hills Baptist Church.
Visitation with the family will be at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home on December 29, 2023 from noon to 2pm, Celebration of Life at 2 pm, graveside to follow.
Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Jones, Laura Jones, Chris Crimmins, Christopher Clark, Alexander Haselton, and Joshua Baggett. We would like to thank all family members and friends for their love, prayers and support during our time of grief. We praise God for the life and love of our mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
