Florence Irene Griffith, age 96, departed this life on July 30, 2020. She was born on July 30, 1924 in Stephens County, Georgia to the late W. O. and Marinda Cabe Thompson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Leland Griffith, DVM; siblings, Hugh Thompson, James Thompson, Bill Thompson and Bruce Thompson.
During World War II, she became a true "Rosie the Riveter", working at Bell Aircraft, building airplane wings, supporting the war effort on the home front. She was a graduate of Athens Business College and worked as a secretary at McGregor Company. While in Athens, she met her future husband, Leland Griffith. Florence went on to become a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her passions were gardening, canning and hospitality. Her philosophy was to ensure others never left hungry and was known as a talented cook. Florence was a longtime member of Cofer's Chapel in Nashville, Tennessee.
She is survived by her son, Phillip (Janet) Griffith of Hampshire, Tennessee; daughters, Sharon (Dave) Slezak of Durham, North Carolina and Gail (Jerry) Tipps of Franklin, Tennessee; grandchildren, Travis Maas, Nicholas Maas, Adam Tipps, Alexander Maas, Heath Tipps, Matthew Griffith, Andrew Griffith and Amanda Maas-Dann; ten great-grandchildren and sister, Betty Wansley of Carnesville, Georgia.
A Private Family Celebration of Life Service will be held at one o'clock in the afternoon on Sunday, August 2, 2020 in Dignity Hall of Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home. A gathering of friends and family will be from twelve until time of service at one. Dr. Robert Picirilli will officiate and entombment will follow in Woodlawn's Cross Mausoleum.
Due to current Coronavirus, the family requests any guest attending visitation to wear a mask, maintain social distancing and limit your time as to allow other guests to offer condolences.
