Mary Elizabeth Mayhew Regen, age 87, passed from this earthly life on June 1st, after a brief illness. She was born the second of three children in Alta Vista, Virginia, August 7th, 1931, to Edwin and Mary Golden Roby Mayhew. She was raised on a tobacco farm in rural Virginia, and considered herself “a country girl.” A leggy tomboy and natural athlete, she was pivotal in winning the regional basketball championship for her Renan, Virginia High School. She graduated Averett College, 1950 and Vanderbilt University, 1952 with a BA.
Married 1953 to Eugene M. Regen, Jr., MD, who survives. Also survived by her three children, Eugene M. Regen, III (Jennifer), E. Scott Regen, MD (Tammy) and Mary Allison Schumacher (Robert D.) and by six grandchildren; Ramsey Regen, Marshall Regen, John Regen, Oliver Schumacher, Robert Schumacher and Cecelia Quinn. Survived by her brother, Earl Mayhew, and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Othelia Shelhorse Anderson.
After teaching in the Metro School System for three years, she turned her efforts to homemaking and the community. Her church and community involvement have included serving on Boards of Trust of the Disciples Divinity House at Vanderbilt, the Disciples of Christ Historical Society, the American Red Cross (Nashville), the Church Women United (President), Christian Women’s Fellowship, Woodmont Christian Church (President), and the Board of Elders, Woodmont Christian Church (Chairman).
She adored her family. She loved her church. She enjoyed reading, travel, planning special occasions with family, knitting and cooking. Interested in history and blessed with an avid intellectual curiosity, she challenged herself and others to be and do their best. Endowed with a positive and generous spirit, she had a special place in her heart for the disadvantaged. She was a devoted wife and loving mother and her presence will be sorely missed.
Visitation is Sunday afternoon, June 9th, 4:00 to 6:00 pm, Woodmont Christian Church, 3601 Hillsboro Rd. Memorial Service Monday, June 10th, 11:00 am with visitation 10:00 to 11:00 prior, Woodmont Christian Church. The inurnment will be later in the afternoon at Mount Hope Cemetery, Franklin, TN.
