Betsy died peacefully in her home on January 3, 2023.
Born in Nashville, TN. on June 28, 1945, she was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. James Buckley “Buck” Baylor and Elizabeth “Betty” Maddin Baylor and by her brother, James “Jim” Buckley Baylor, Jr.
Betsy graduated from Parmer School, The Harpeth Hall School and the University of Georgia, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Betsy devoted her life to education, becoming a librarian in the Metropolitan Nashville School System where she served children for many years at Cole Elementary School.
Betsy had a life-long love of horses, acquired from her maternal grandfather, John Keith Maddin. Betsy enjoyed riding horses with her grandfather at his Journey’s End Farm in Williamson County.
Betsy is survived by her good friend of many decades, Dan Shilstat, and by numerous Baylor, Farrell, Maddin, Mitchell and Wills cousins. In mid-life, Betsy was a member of The Downtown Presbyterian Church, where for many years she served waffles at their annual, Christmas Waffle Shop.
After her retirement, Betsy established an herb garden which she maintained for many years at the Belle Meade Historic Site and Winery. She was a former member of the Town and Country Garden Club, of which she was once President. She and her friend Dan enjoyed eating at Sperry’s, always sitting near the back at the same table. She also enjoyed watching University of Georgia football games and going to Monteagle over the Fourth of July where she and her cousins, Irene and Ridley Wills II, watched the town parade complete with Shriners riding motorbikes.
Betsy will be buried in a graveside service in Mt. Olivet Cemetery at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 13, 2023. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made either to the Harpeth Hall School or the Nashville Humane Association.
