Deanne Sumner Carroll peacefully passed away at the age of 74 on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 in Nashville, Tennessee surrounded by her loving family at Alive Hospice. She was born Deanne Irene Sumner on May 2, 1940, in Nashville, the daughter of Luther Calvin and Irene (Nicholson) Sumner.
Deanne grew up in Nashville, graduating from Hillsboro High school, Carson-Newman College, and George Peabody College at Vanderbilt University. She taught English and journalism for 7 years at John Overton High School and for 22 years at Christ Presbyterian Academy. She was active in her community, the Garden Club: Seed and Weed, McNeilly Day home, Santa's Helpers, Action Auction, and was very involved in her church, Christ Presbyterian. She was a loving wife, a caring and devoted mother, a doting grandmother, a devoted friend, and a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, loyally devoted to prayer and reading scripture.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, William Timothy Carroll, Jr., of Nashville; three daughters, Maria Carroll Jernigan and husband Dan, of Nashville, Deanne Carroll Ryan and husband Scott, of Salina, KS and Katherine Carroll Britt and husband Steve, of Austin, TX; and her eight grandchildren, Elizabeth, Grace and Timothy Jernigan, Collister and William Ryan, and Boaz, Zella and Bishop Britt.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 13, at the Marshall Donnelly Combs Funeral Home, 201 25th Avenue North, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A private family burial will follow. Memorial services will be held at 10:45am on Friday, July 25, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 2323 Old Hickory Blvd, Nashville.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Deanne’s name to Christ Presbyterian Academy.
