Dawn Leslie Callaway, known to her friends as Lori Lee, was born June 9, 1951 in Pomona, Los Angeles County, California, the daughter of Donald Lewis and Ikie Jean (Wimberly) Callaway. She passed peacefully into rest on January 21, 2017 after an illness of about a month. For a span of approximately 25 years, Lori crisscrossed the United States, hitchhiking, sleeping under the stars, working odd jobs when possible. She saw many sights and experienced life as a person unencumbered by the constraints of a permanent address. These experiences provided her with a wealth of stories. Many times during her travels she passed through Nashville and eventually made it her home base. A gentle spirit, she had a special love for plants and especially animals. By 1991 she decided it was time to come off of the road because she wanted to get a puppy. With the help of friends from First Christian Church of Nashville she secured a job, an apartment and a puppy, which she named Danielle, her constant companion from 1991-2007. Lori’s hobby was writing. In the last twenty-five years she recorded her thoughts in several hundred journals. In 1992 Free River Press of Lansing, Iowa published a slim volume of her poetry, in the genre of Folk Literature, entitled Hitchhiker’s Dream under her pen name “Rebel Yell.” An active member of First Christian Church of Nashville which later became Aspen Grove Christian Church in Franklin, she was an avid reader of her Bible, putting her faith and trust in Jesus Christ as her Provider and Savior. She is survived by a brother, Robert G. Brashears and family, her friends at the Harding Place Apartments, her church family at Aspen Grove Christian Church in Franklin, especially friends and caretakers Lee and Cathy Coulter, and her beloved dog, Alexandria (Allie). A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Aspen Grove Christian Church at 274 Mallory Station Road, Franklin, Tennessee on Sunday January 29, 2017 at 5 pm.
