David Marshall Stewart, age 99, of Nashville, Tennessee, passed away August 14, 2015 after an eight month illness. Mr. Stewart is survived by son James Marshall Stewart. He was preceded in death by wife, Gladys Carroll Stewart, and parents David and Mary Marshall Stewart. Mr. Stewart was born in Nashville on August 1, 1916. He grew up in both Nashville and McKenzie. He graduated from Bethel College in 1938, and Peabody College in 1939 with a Bachelor of Library Science degree. While at Peabody, he worked at the Vanderbilt University Library. After graduation he was head of the Poinsett County Arkansas Library System. Marshall was a Tennessee supervisor for WPA library service projects from 1940-1942 and head of the Memphis State Library in 1942 and 1946. He served in the US Navy as Lieutenant Commander during World War II from 1942-1946. He also worked at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC in 1947, as librarian CIA 1948-1960, and as Chief Librarian of the Public Library of Nashville and Davidson County from 1960-1985. He lived by Galatians 5:22-23 enjoying many friendships throughout his life. He was a rare combination of caring friend and businesslike, efficient boss, trusted by all who knew him. Marshall served as a member of the American Library Association (Pub. Lib. Sect. Pres. 1966-1967), Arthritis Foundation, Friends of Chamber Music, Travelers Aid, Southeastern Library Association, Coffee House Club, Kiwanis, Council of Community Agencies, and the USNR. Funeral services will to be held at two o’clock on Friday, August 21, 2015 in Woodlawn’s South Mausoleum Chapel with visitation one hour prior. Entombment will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice, the Nashville Public Library Foundation, or the Arthritis Foundation. Mr. Stewart’s son, Jim, wishes to thank many for their kindness and support.
