Heaven gained an angel today. Conrad Burkhalter Smith, our dear beloved infant son, died in his sleep on Saturday, March 22, 2014. Conrad was born on April 19, 2013. He was perfect. A beautiful boy, full of playful mischief and vigor. We, and all of his family and loved ones, are heartbroken. But we know that he is banging on guitars in heaven while laughing and smiling at his big sister’s antics.
The family will receive visitors on Monday, March 24, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. The family will also receive visitors on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in advance of the funeral mass that will take place on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. A private graveside burial will follow.
In lieu of flowers, we respectfully request that those so inclined donate to the Conrad Burkhalter Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will support a student from Augusta County, Virginia attending Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. Please send any donations to: Conrad Burkhalter Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP, 1600 Division Street Suite 700, Nashville, TN 37203. But, most importantly, we ask for your prayers.
Conrad’s family includes his mother and father, Eileen Burkhalter Smith and Eric Smith, his big sister, Louisa, his maternal grandparents, Dr. Terry and Peggy Burkhalter, and his paternal grandparents, Albert and Shirley Smith. Conrad is also watching over his Aunt Michelle Smith, Cousins Jack Smith and Eleanor Smith, Aunt Stephanie Smith, Uncle Stephen Bolton, Cousins Ian Bolton and Caroline Bolton, Uncle Jeffrey Burkhalter, Aunt Sara Burkhalter, Cousin Reece Burkhalter, Uncle Stuart Burkhalter, Aunt Julie Burkhalter, Cousin Helen Burkhalter, Aunt Emily Burkhalter, and many other second cousins and loved ones who Conrad will enjoy watching and helping from his perch above while he meets all of his previously deceased family members, including but most certainly not limited to, his Great-Grandfather Elmer Shifflette and Great-Uncle William H. Canon, both of whom are having a big time with their newest pal.
There are no easy answers. Life is not fair. There is no scoring official keeping track of the equities. At least not here on Earth. But we shall keep our chins up and march on with Conrad embedded in our hearts, with the certain knowledge that Conrad was simply too good for this world.
And his big sister will have the best guardian angel that anyone could ever want.
