Charles “Charlie” Maurice Johnson, Jr., 71, of Nashville, passed away peacefully at his home on July 18, 2018, after a courageous battle with cancer. Charlie was born in Nashville on April 1, 1947 to the late Charles Maurice Johnson and the late Martha Jean Cawthon Johnson.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 46 years, Vikki Hall Johnson; son Blake Taylor Johnson of Atlanta; daughter Keats Johnson Leach (Philip Barry Leach, Jr.) of Nashville; grandchildren Collins Grace Leach and Philip Barry Leach III. He is also survived by his brother Nat E. Johnson (Jane Johnson), one niece, and one nephew.
Charlie graduated from Hillsboro High School and went on to attend his beloved alma mater, Auburn University, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. Upon graduation, he earned the AIA School Medal and the Certificate of Merit for excellence in the study of architecture. Charlie served in the 401st MP POW unit in the Army Reserve from 1967-1973. He then joined the architecture firm Yearwood and Johnson before forming his own firm, Johnson and Bailey P.C, in Murfreesboro, TN. He was the long-time architect for National Health Corporation, Rutherford County Schools, Williamson County Schools, and Murfreesboro City Schools. Upon his retirement, he formed CMJ Consulting. He was an Emeritus member of the American Institute of Architects.
He was an avid Auburn football fan, attending almost every home football game each year, even in the height of his illness. He was a true Auburn Man and lived each day in embodying the Auburn Creed with “a spirit that is not afraid”. He was a member of numerous societies at Auburn including The 1856 Society, The Samford Society, The Shug Jordan Society, All American Society, and was a lifetime member of the Auburn Alumni Association. He was a long-time member of Richland Country Club where he enjoyed his twice weekly tennis leagues, the fellowship of his CLC Alumni Bible study group, and traveling with his friends and family.
Visitation with the family is scheduled for 9:30 AM on Saturday, July 28th at First Presbyterian Church (4815 Franklin Pike, Nashville, TN 37220), with memorial services at 11:30 AM.
