Carolyn was the widow of the late Richard Mayo Cate to whom she was devotedly married for 57 happy years. She is the daughter of the late Thomas Stewart and Kathryn Jett Cox of Knoxville. Carolyn is survived by her loving daughter Elizabeth Gail Cate (Betsy), son-in-law Fred Jarrett Sussner, and beloved grandson Richard Harrison Cate-Sussner (Hank) of Nashville.
Carolyn and Dick were founding members of Christ Presbyterian Church, Covenant Presbyterian Church, and most recently Stephens Valley Church. Carolyn was a graduate of Central High School and the University of Tennessee both in Knoxville. She was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Carolyn's family was her life's work and her source of happiness. She was a homemaker with great talents for cooking/baking, cake decorating, and all kinds of sewing and handwork. Carolyn was a talented artist in many mediums and often used her talents to help decorate the classroom and create lessons to aid in her daughter's teaching career. She also whole heartedly supported and enthusiastically participated with Dick in his love for Vanderbilt athletics. Carolyn enjoyed genealogical research and was a wealth of family history. In the last 3 years, her greatest joy has come from being "CeCe" to her long awaited grandson, Hank. She will be greatly missed by her family and life long friends.
A graveside service for the family will be held at 11:00 on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at 1:30 at the Stephens Valley Church (6000 Pasquo Rd.) There will be a visitation immediately following the service.
In leu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Carolyn's name to one of the charities she lovingly supported in life: Alive Hospice Inc., St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Berea College, or St. Luke's Community House.
I hope these are ok. I will have to send the picture by text message since it isn't on my computer. I am also texting her SS# for the death certificate. Thank you for all your help!
Sincerely,
Betsy Cate
