Carl Gibbs Smith, Jr. passed away on February 11, 2020. He was born in Chicago IL on October 25, 1935 and lived in Chattanooga many years before settling in Nashville in 1967. He is preceded in death by parents Carl Gibbs Smith and Barbara Caskin Smith and twin sister Barbara Lee Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Linda, sons Stuart (Lisa) and Chris Smith, and grandchildren Jackson, Olivia, Ross, Nate and Spencer Smith.
Gibbs attended McCallie School and served in the U.S. Army. He went on to graduate from UT Chattanooga and enjoyed a long career in the insurance industry. He worked with Forest Life, Provident Life and Blair, Follin, Allen and Walker, which merged into Corroon and Black. Then went on to start Benefit Programs in 1978. He obtained his Certified Life Underwriter (CLU) early in his career and was President of the Nashville Association of Life Underwriters in the early 1980’s. He served on many National NALU committees and was recognized by his state industry association as ‘The Insurance Professional of the Year’ in 2006.
Gibbs was a huge sports fan, enjoying college and professional sports of all kinds, as well as any team his grandchildren played on. The University of TN Vols was his favorite college team and you could see him sporting his favorite orange on game days.
The support of education through scholarships gave him great joy with numerous schools enjoying the benefit of his generosity.
Visitation with the family will be on Saturday February 15, from 11 – 1 pm with a memorial service at 1 pm at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home in Nashville.
