Betty Miles Shockley passed away on July 2, 2015. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Epps Hord Miles of Nashville, and her brother Dr. Franklin Miles of Montgomery, AL.
She is survived by her best friend and husband of 63 years, Charles Nolen Shockley; children Charles “Chuck” Shockley Jr. and wife Susan of Franklin, and Sara “Sally” Shockley Thompson and husband David of Atlanta; and grandchildren Will Shockley of Franklin, Claire Shockley of Asheville, NC, and Robert Thompson and Daniel Thompson of Atlanta.
Betty was born in Nashville on June 21, 1925 and was a proud graduate of West End High School and Peabody College. After college, she worked as a stewardess for American Airlines. Later, she was a much beloved kindergarten teacher for many years at St. George’s Episcopal Church. Betty was a lifelong member of Second Presbyterian Church until she joined Calvary Methodist in 2010. She was known for her love of children, dogs, and family gatherings. She was also widely appreciated for her warmth, welcoming smile, and keen sense of humor.
The family would like to express their eternal gratitude to her amazing caregivers Anita May, Sandra Binkley, and Lori Warren, as well as David May and Randy Warren. Your love and compassion are appreciated more than you will ever know.
To honor Betty’s life, Rev. Libby Baxter will conduct a service at 12 PM on Tuesday, July 7 at Calvary United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends from 10:30 AM until the service at the church.
Flowers and memorial contributions to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shriners Hospitals for Children are welcome.
