He is survived by his daughter Margaret Hicks Doubleday of Falls Church, VA, and his granddaughter Margaret Allison Doubleday of Savage, MD. He is preceded in death by his wife Josephine Durrett Doubleday, his daughter, Sarah (Sally) Elizabeth Doubleday and his parents, Margaret Anna Thompson Doubleday and Bennett Bell Doubleday, Sr.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee on April 19, 1925, Ben attended Hardy Elementary and Wallace University School and graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy. In 1946, he graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Engineering where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Ben thought the best thing about his time at Vanderbilt was meeting his life-long love, Jo. They married in 1952.
After graduation he worked for his father at the Doubleday Coal company, and began a career in commercial real estate with his friend William Bainbridge, Jr. Later he formed his own company, Doubleday and Co. where he remained active until his death.
Ben was an avid fisherman and hunter and formed life-long friendships around the world with his fellow sportsmen. From childhood he was never without the companionship of his dogs and his stories about his life and adventures entertained his friends for decades.
Ben and Jo attended West End United Methodist church for over 87 years.
The funeral and Celebration of Life service was held at West End United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 5. A gathering of friends and family was held in Reed Hall at West End United Methodist Church at 10:00 AM.
A private internment for the family will be held at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
