The third daughter of Edith Rose Steinbeck Britt and William Jennings Britt, Barbara was born in Charleston, West Virginia. She enjoyed a happy childhood in the Strong Court area of Charleston, surrounded by extended family. The Britts moved to Abney Circle when Barbara was a teenager, to a warm, cozy home surrounded by a beautiful garden carefully tended by her father. In the summer she attended Girl Scout camp, which had a deep impact on her and sparked a lifelong love of the outdoors.
Barbara graduated from Averett University and served as a medical secretary to two internal medicine physicians. When she married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Wendel Bundy, in April of 1952, Bob was completing his Ph.D. at Penn State University. He greatly enjoyed fly-fishing so Barbara took a fly-fishing course, quickly learning to tie flies. As newlyweds they spent many joyful hours together fishing streams in central Pennsylvania. Throughout the rest of their lives they took every opportunity to fish, hike, or camp together. They shared this love of nature with their three children, Robert Wendel Bundy, Jr. (Ellen), William Frederick Bundy (Kim), and Elizabeth “Libby” Ann Bundy Bacon (Steve Buckner), who survive them. Barbara leaves behind ten beloved grandchildren, Diana, Rob, and Jameson (Amanda) Bundy; Will, Miller, and Lizzie Bundy; Britt, Bennett, Sara and Cyrus Bacon, and two very loved great grandsons, Phillip and Harlan.
Barbara devoted herself to family, church and home. A longtime and active member of West End United Methodist Church, she was very involved in the Upper Room Sunday School class, the United Methodist Women, the Study Circle, and Church Women United. She also enjoyed her membership in the Singing Hills Garden Club, the Centennial Club, and her sisterhood in PEO. She regularly opened her home to all these groups, hosting friends and new acquaintances with warmth and love. She also served as an officer of the family business, Security Electronics, Inc., helping build the business from the ground up.
Barbara was predeceased by her adoring parents, her loving husband, her admired sisters Jeanne Britt (John) Purdom and Elsie Ann Britt (Conrad) Graeber, and adored nephew, William “Biz” Purdom. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she leaves behind her loved nephews Conrad (Susan) Graeber, and John (Debbie) Purdom.
Family and friends are encouraged to attend a celebration of Barbara’s life, to be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 20, at West End United Methodist Church, 2200 West End Avenue. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers donations may be directed to West End United Methodist Church, or the Girl Scouts of Middle Tennessee.
