Austin W Smith Jr.

Austin W Smith Jr., age 87, born August 31, 1927 in Cookeville, TN. passed away Sunday, July5, 2015. Preceded in death by 1st wife, Marjorie Peery Smith; parents, Austin & Sina Smith Sr.; daughter, Nadine Upchurch; sisters, Ann Smith Vick, & Myra Smith Gracey. Survived by wife, Helen White Smith, grandchildren, Tonya Upchurch, Phillip Upchurch; 2 great grandchildren & a host of family and friends. Austin joined the Navy at 17 and was a WWII veteran serving in the South Pacific Theatre. Austin graduated from TN Tech and was a huge sports fan of his alma mater and the Tennessee Titans. Austin continued his post graduate work at MTSU & Vanderbilt. Austin worked in education in an administrative capacity and with the Board of Regents. He served as the TN VP for the Jayce’s and was a JCI Senator. He also served for 46 years on the TN Credit Union Board of Directors during which he served as Chairman and Vice Chairman. Austin was active in the Lebanon Road Church of Christ, The Donelson Lions Club, The American Legion and the VFW. Visitation Thursday, July 9th 12pm until time of service. Funeral Service at 1pm at Lebanon Road Church of Christ. Interment will be in Cookeville at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made in Austin’s honor to Lebanon Road Church of Christ. Pallbearers are Craig Gracey, Dalton Upchurch, Phillip Upchurch, James Oldham, Vic White & Paul Horn. Honorary pallbearers, Dr. James Barrack, James Drake, Dr. Douglas Holliday.
