She was born August 19th 1947 in Wisconsin Rapids, WI to Truman, and Mary Jane Johnston. She earned a B.A. degree in early childhood education from the University of Southern Illinois. On December 28, 1968 she married the love of her life, David Russel Mathers. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years David Mathers, sons Colin, Tyler, and Troy Mathers. Her brother Jonathan York. And 5 grand children Luna, Brandon, Wren, Ivan, and Zoe Mathers.
She was an educator, published author, and entrepreneur who marched to the beat of a different drum.
She taught special education, and elementary education in the 60’s and 70’s. She started an antique clothing company called Bustles and Bloomers in 1981. She owned and operated a preschool out of her home called Magical Years in the 80’s, she started and co owned the Jenny Wren Press in 1988 with world renowned children’s illustrator Tasha Tudor. She later spearheaded a Brown County Mentoring Program in Nashville, that matched artists of all kinds, with teenagers. She managed rental properties and even wrote a book that was published called “Speaking of me”. In her 60’s she fought with cancer and won.
She loved all things historical and fell right at home in Brown County IN. She passionately collected antiques starting way back in her 20’s, and called herself a caretaker of history.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 20th, 2022 at the Seasons Lodge Conference Center from 2-5pm.
