Robert F. Winter, 86 of Nashua, NH passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the Fairview Nursing Home, Hudson, NH with his family by his side. He was born October 12, 1928 in Boston, MA, a son of the late Frederick and Katherine (McIssac) Winter
Mr. Winter proudly served his country in the US Army. He was career military, serving over 30 years, working his way up from a 17 year old buck private MP, guarding war criminals at Sugamo prison in Japan with the occupying force to retiring December 31, 1976 as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW4). In between he served in Korea and later in Vietnam in 1968-69 with the 101st Airborne division. Among other medals he earned, he was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters. Following his military retirement, Mr. Winter began working as a civilian for the military, as Real Property Manager at Ft. Devens, MA from 1977-1998. He won employee of the year at Ft. Devens and due to his vast knowledge, became known as the “Encyclopedia of Ft. Devens.” Mr. Winter married Lotte Geck on February 5, 1955 in Heilbronn, Germany. He was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Nashua; an avid reader and enjoyed traveling during his retirement. Mr. Winter was an honest and good man, a quiet, dignified soul.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years; Lotte (Geck) Winter of Nashua, three children; Karen E. Jones of Nashua, William R. Winter and his wife Katherine of Ashland, MA and Jean M. Rubin and her husband Harry of Nashua, four grandchildren; Catriona J. Rubin, Lindsey M. Rubin, Katherine (Jones) Greeley and her husband Keith and Brendan Jones, a brother; Donald Winter and his wife Ann of Wayne, ME and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother; James E. Winter and two sisters; Jean Loynes and Betty Tortolano.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday; February 25, 2015 at 10:00am in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 216 E. Dunstable Rd., Nashua. Family will greet friends Wednesday from 9:30am until the time of service in the church. Burial with military honors will follow Wednesday at 1:00pm in the NH State Veteran Cemetery, 110 DW Highway, Boscawen, NH. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to The Screaming Eagle Foundation, 32 Screaming Eagle Blvd., P.O.
