Nancy Ellen Byam, 75, of Bedford, NH, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at Ridgewood Center. Born on November 24, 1948 in Lowell, MA, she was the daughter of the late George Alan and Ruth (Jenkins) Byam.
Nancy grew up in North Tewksbury and graduated from Abbott Academy. After high school, she went on to attend the University of Michigan and Harvard University where she obtained her Master’s degree. She had a successful career as a writer for the Rutland Vermont Herald and the Associated Press, as well as a technical writer for various computer firms.
Nancy was a world traveler having served in the Peace Corps in Brazil, which helped her become multi-lingual when she lived in Greece, the Caribbean Islands and India as a global citizen. One of her favorite travels was the red rock country of the southwest U.S. Her love for all animals, particularly dogs, throughout her life played a role in her becoming a significant donor to the SPCA and the World Wildlife Federation. She was an avid equestrian and an artist, both in paint and with music. She enjoyed playing the guitar, piano and she sang beautifully. Most recently, she loved watching the old westerns of our childhood, and was able to maintain her sense of humor through her illness and could still sing a show tune.
She is survived by her sister Martha A. Byam and her husband Gary Fincke of Exeter, NH; her nieces Emily Stone and her family of Bronxville, NY and Sarah Bologna and her family of North Hampton, NH.
Services will be held privately for the Byam family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Nancy's memory may be made to your local SPCA.
