John J. Como, 93, a nine year resident of Nashua, NH passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2015 at the Huntington at Nashua. He was born June 13, 1921 in Staten Island, NY, son of the late Diego and Grazia (Sgarlatta) Como. Mr. Como lived in Staten Island until 1972, when he and his family moved to Glenview IL. He has been a resident of Nashua since 2005.
Mr. Como was a graduate of Port Richmond High School, Class of 1939. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Wagner College. Mr. Como proudly served his country during WWII in the US Army Medical Corps 99th Evacuation Hospital in New Guinea, Phillipines, and Japan, earning the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Clusters and a Purple Heart. He married Mary S. Delpriora in 1948. Mr. Como worked for over 51 years as a Biochemist for Baxter Travenol. He was a member of the American Chemical Society for over 60 years, and served as President of the NY/NJ Chapter. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 134 in Morton Grove, IL and Post 3 in Nashua, NH, and the VFW Post 3579 in Park Ridge, IL. Mr. Como was also active in Junior Achievement and the Holy Name Society. Along with his wife Mary, he enjoyed golfing, was an excellent bridge player and was very active with the Glenview Senior Center and Morton Grove Senior Center.
He is survived by a daughter, Judith Toti and her husband Norman of Bedford, MA; a son, John Como and his wife Kay Lyn of Fairview, TX; two grandchildren, Chance Brandon Como and Delaney Reann Como; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years Mary S. Como in 2013; by four brothers, Anthony, Michael, Santo and Peter Como and by three sisters, Frances Fiorillo, Mary Wakeham and Domenica Lalima.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, January 8, 2014 from2:00pm to 7:00pm in the Zis-Sweeney Funeral Home, 26 Kinsley St., Nashua. A funeral service will be held Friday at 9:00am in the funeral home. Family will greet friends from 8:00 am until the time of service. Interment with military honors will follow in the NH State Veteran Cemetery, 110 DW Highway, Boscawen, NH.
