“Howie” was born on 2/11/1931 in Watertown, MA to Howard M. and Doris V. (Wadsworth) MacDougall. He grew up in Watertown, MA and graduated from Watertown High School. Immediately after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S Army and served in the Korean War. After completing his military service, he met and married his sweetheart, Marion L. Fanjoy. He and Marion soon moved to Burlington, Massachusetts to begin raising their family.
Howie was an extremely hard worker, but vacation and recreation were important to him as well. He provided his family with an endless supply of opportunities, adventures and memories. As a family, they hiked, camped, snow skied, water skied, and spent vacation time at various beaches and lakes.
Howie could do almost anything related to construction, maintenance or repair. If something needed to be done, and he didn’t know how to do it, he taught himself. He was quite the perfectionist. Everything was always done right.
When Howard’s children were teenagers, he fulfilled his dream of buying a cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee. It wasn’t long before he decided to transform that summer cottage into a much larger year-round home. He proudly did nearly all of the work himself. His family (especially his son) helped him and learned a lot from the experience.
Howie put all he had into everything he did. When he was in his late 40s, he decided to take up running. Just like with the cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee, he put everything into it. Running a marathon soon became his goal. He completed the Ocean State Marathon when he was 48 years old, running it in a time of 3 hours and 20 minutes.
Howard worked for many years as an Elevator Mechanic for Otis Elevator. He retired from Otis in 1991.
Howie never golfed as a young adult. He was too busy for that. But he always said he would golf when he retired. Upon retiring, he got some golf clubs and took his first swings. He soon put everything into his golf game and got his wife into it as well. By now, he and his wife were spending their summers on Lake Winnipesaukee and their winters on a golf course in Fort Myers, Florida. He golfed several times a week, year-round, for much of his retirement years.
Howard is preceded in death by his loving wife Marion L. (Fanjoy) MacDougall, to whom he was married for 65 years. She passed away one year prior to his death. He missed her dearly every day. He is also preceded in death by his beloved son David Robert MacDougall, who sadly died at the age of 5. In addition, he is preceded in death by his sister Betty (MacDougall) Fahey and his brother Robert MacDougall.
Howard is survived by his daughter Debra L. (MacDougall) Flynn and her husband Paul of Burlington, MA; his son Steven H. MacDougall and his wife Ruth of Bedford, NH; his granddaughters Stefanie Flynn of San Francisco, CA and Michelle Flynn of Breckenridge, CO; his grandson Timothy MacDougall and wife Lexi of Stamford, CT; his grandson Daniel MacDougall and wife Olivia of Xenia, OH; and great granddaughters Vivien MacDougall and Winnifred MacDougall. He is also survived by his sister Barbara (MacDougall) Reichert of Billerica, MA, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Howie and his wife Marion will be held at a later date when his family can gather together.
