Richard was born in Boston, MA to Rhoda and Abraham Barker on June 27th, 1944. He was raised in Boston and completed High School at the Boston Latin School. He attended Tufts University for his Bachelor’s Degree and Boston University where he received his Master’s Degree in Education. Richard spent his entire career as a High School French Teacher, Foreign Language Department Head, and was a Basketball Coach at Amesbury High School. During this time Richard (Dick) met his wife, Beatrice (Bea). Dick and Bea were married for 47 years.
Dick was a lifelong sports fan who enjoyed coaching his son David in various youth sports and teaching David his favorite sport of tennis. Some of his favorite times were spent at the Pioneer League coaching David and his team. Dick was a supporter of the local performing arts and enjoyed his time acting in several local productions. His sense of humor, quick sarcastic wit, and caring for the wellbeing of others was always on display to those he knew and loved.
After retiring from teaching Dick and Bea moved from Newburyport, MA to Naples where they enjoyed everything the Naples community had to offer. Dick was an avid tennis player and could be found multiple times per week competing and laughing with his friends on the tennis court. Dick had a passion for traveling and in their retirement Dick and Bea traveled the world together on many incredible trips including tours in Africa, Asia, South America, and all over Europe.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents Rhoda and Abraham Barker and his sister Wilma Eagerman.
Dick is survived by his wife, Beatrice. His son David and his wife Eryn. Grandson Cameron Kjelland. Nephew Aaron Eagerman. Niece Andrea Poetzel, her husband Chris and children Brextyn, twins Adaleide and Andersen, and Olivia. Nephew Cory Eagerman, his wife Julia, and children Owen and Jack.
