Paula Silverstein (nee Leith), of Naples, Florida, passed away on Saturday, October 28th, 2023 at the age of 73. She is survived by her beloved husband, Larry Silverstein; her loving children, Amy (Jack) Cilles, and Scott (Joanne K.) Silverstein; and her grandchildren, Bennett and Sofie Silverstein. She was predeceased by her parents, Alice (nee Berry) & Claron Leith.
Paula received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and her Master’s degree from John’s Hopkin’s University. She was an Elementary School Teacher/Reading Specialist, and someone who devoted 40 years helping young children cultivate the skills needed to succeed in life. She was known as a “Teacher’s” teacher; so much so, she was a finalist for the MD Teacher of the Year Award. In her free time, she played tennis, but, loved playing golf. She was a member of WGA, and played in a number of MD State tournaments. Unfortunately, her playing days came to an end on July 20, 1988. After a day of volunteering at a golf tournament in Baltimore, she was driving home during a bad storm when a tree fell, from a tornado touching down nearby, onto the roof of her car causing her to be paralyzed.
After 7 months in a Rehab hospital, Paula was determined to look at life as the glass being “Half-Full”. She was a beacon of strength and resilience, inspiring all who had the privilege of knowing her. She always had a smile on her face, a positive attitude, and was a true warrior. For 35 years, she faced the world from the confines of a wheelchair, yet she never allowed her physical limitations to define her. Instead, she embraced life and was a shining example of living life to the fullest.
Paula was living her dream retirement life here in Florida. She loved TwinEagles and all the wonderful people she met over the years. Her legacy of resilience, determination, and unwavering positivity will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched.
In lieu of flowers, we kindly request that donations be made to the International Center for Spinal Cord Injury at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in honor of Paula. This cause was close to her heart, and we believe it would be a meaningful way to honor her memory. (see link below)
