Joseph (Joe) was born on April 12, 1944 in Cambridge, MA, son of the late Sumner and Shirley Miller (Rivitz). Raised in Riverside, CA, Joe served and was honorably discharged as a Small Arms Expert Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Joe was stationed at the Norton Air Force Base and served during active war time under the Vietnam war. Decorated with the National Defense Service Medal (an award presented by President Dwight D Eisenhower). After serving Joe worked his way across the U.S. and settled back in Natick, MA where he began work as a professional bartender and college student. Joe graduated from Bentley College, class of 1973, with a degree in Business.
Joe met his wife Susan in 1991 and it took awhile, but he finally convinced her to marry him in May of 2004. This union made him an instant father to three teenage girls. He was very devoted to Sue, and together they created a new life for themselves moving to Naples, FL in 1993. Joe was a generous and kind husband, father and friend. He also formed a wonderful bond with his dogs Toby and Sasha whose company enriched his life! However, nothing filled his heart more than his granddaughters and grand nieces. Joe was known to them as "Grampy" and “Uncle Joey” and showed his unwavering love and adoration for “his” girls. He cherished spending time with them, coloring, playing games, and making breakfast for them during countless sleepovers (don’t forget the bacon). These young ladies were the center of his world. From the moment they were born, he was captivated by their tiny fingers, their infectious giggles, and their boundless questions.
Joe was predeceased by his daughter Erica in 1999 and his sister Paula Miller-Buckley. Joe enjoyed being with his wife for over 30 years! In addition to his wife Susan, he leaves his children Jodie Lynn LeLievre (Matthew) of Estero, FL and Melissa Marie Geary (Timothy) of Tampa, FL; his grandchildren Madison and Emma LeLievre, Brielle and Camden Geary; his nieces Summer Thornburg (Matthew) and Fawn Oulette (Geoff); grand nieces Ashley and Emily Thornburg, Jessica Oulette; and grand nephew Michael Oulette.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joseph's life by gathering for a Celebration of Life at Hodges Funeral Home at Naples Memorial Gardens, 525 111th Ave N, Naples, FL 34108 on Monday, October 7th from 10:30a.m to 12:00p.m. Following the ceremony there will be food and refreshments offered for all inside at Hodges Funeral Home.
