When Took and I started in the car business we met Joe. We immediately started a healthy Va. Tech/ William and Mary contest at which Joe was very good. He loved the W&M Tribe and we gave him unmerciful grief when they changed the mascot to "Ebirt" to be politically correct. I sat with Joe thru many a Pontiac/GMC meeting and I always learned a great deal from his fantastic grasp of the car business. Not to mention wonderful stories of the logistical problems of raising 10 kids, such as going to buy shoes! He was a great story teller! So very sorry for the families loss of such a wonderful man but I believe his pain is gone and he's "suiting up" in Williamsburg! Sincerely, Rick Kern, Kern Motor Co. Winchester Va. 

Mr. Joe Koons was the consummate father, gentleman and God driven man. I feel honored to have had the opportunity to learn and model my life around his love for his family and friends. He will be dearly missed, but I know his legacy and amazing impacts he has had on his children and family will live on for generations to come. Shared HS football with this man of gentle,spirit in Game of Conact.  
Joe as QB was guarded as the most valuable in this often violent game.  
But I always  remember him struggling to stay in the game with knee braces and obvious pain no matter what.  Never upset under adverse situations.  
His generosity in later life I never knew of directly but always knew it was vast.  
We are not meant for this world but for eternal joy with the creator of our Spirit made in GODS living Image.  May your family relish the peace you bestowed on them for 7 decades.  

Our family first met Joe and Nancy when we were all neighbors living in Manassas, VA. Our wives became   close friends, along with our girls who were the same age as several of their older daughters. It was a great and happy time in all our lives and produced many of our best memories like the time we tried to make ice cream at a backyard picnic, and still having a liquid goop after over an hour of churning, Joe left for about 15minutes only to return with several gallons from a local store, saying the churn kind wouldn't be ready until midnight and he was hungry now !! I was always very impressed with Joe's business ethics and sense of fair play towards his employees, having bought quite a few vehicles first at the Manassas location and later at Tysons Corner. He'd always make it a point to be sure that one of his sales staff, whether it was a new person just learning the ropes, or a veteran in a dry spell, whoever needed some help, got the credit on the sales contract. That's really what made Joe such a special, caring person, and truly showed what he was made of, believed and lived. Over the years our families shared many good times together that we'll cherish always. To Nancy and everyone in the extended Koons family please accept our heartfelt  condolences in Joe's passing, with the knowledge of all his good works accomplished in this world, and that he's now resting in the comforting arms of the angels and Father. As a child, I remembered the entire Koons family and Nancy, my neighbor, as a gift. Each member had a unique smile and a wonder full sense of life. Joe, as all the members of the family,  was a childhood and teenage friend. Today I will look to the heavens and say "Thank you." 

I was blessed to have Joe as my boss for many years. He inspired everyone to give their best, as he always gave his. I remember in the early 80s, Joe and his brothers decided to go in together on a  big print ad for Presidents Day Weekend. Ads were ordered weeks in advance then and it was a huge investment for J.Koons at that time. The Thursday before the holiday weekend they were calling for a mega snow storm. We all knew he was worried about it as we got ready for the sale. He called for a sales meeting on the showroom floor and announced some incentive bonuses and told us not to worry about the snow, that he had a special snow dance that would keep it away. He said he was going to do it now to assure us a good sales weekend. The big showroom doors were open to bring in the cars that were on sale. He strolled over, walked outside, and proceeded to do a "No Snow Dance." Like an American Indian doing a rain dance, he hopped around on one foot and thumped his mouth with his open hand and chanted, "No snow, no snow, no snow." And it didn't. We all loved that he cared so much and that he wasn't afraid to show it. He will be missed. He was an inspiration to many.

Worked at J. Koons Pontiac / GMC in Vienna, Va in the late 70's and early 80's.  Joe and Nancy were exceptional individuals and Joe will certainly be missed by his large and loving family.  He was a true gentleman and mentor to so many.  Our hearts go out to Nancy and the family.

When I saw Joe's obit in the Post this morning I went and dug up my 1964 O'Connell yearbook. We all had little "inspirational" sayings placed under our pictures. I never learned where they came from but Joe's was very prophetic. It read "Honor is purchased by the deeds he does...honor is not won."  Joe was the most honorable man I ever met and his obituary described him perfectly. I didn't have much contact with Joe after we left O'Connell (my loss) but the four years I spent with him at O'Connell were inspiring. I'm so sorry for your loss - it's really everyone's loss.

I have such fond memories of Joe.  He was a lovely, honest man and a mentor to me in the automobile business. I enjoyed working for him in Manassas and learned much from him.  I recall babysitting for Joe and Nancy’s children and getting to know the family on such a personal level. So sorry for your loss.

Nancy and family, so sorry to learn of Joe's passing.  I will always remember him as described in the obituary - humble.  My fondest memory goes back to about 1983 when I was working for him at J. Koons Pontiac.  There were a few of us who wanted to do an early morning Bible Study.  When asked,  Joe immediately and graciously approved of the idea and allowed us to conveniently meet right at the dealership.  So many other memories, but this one is at the top!  Thanks for sharing him with us, Chris Call (2 Cor. 1:3,4) 

So many of us went to St. James School and to O'Connell HS where Joe was always our friend and leader in sports plus he and Nancy could always be found talking in the bus port at school.
I am one of the Johnson twins (Trish & Taffie) and brother, Bobby, was also good friends with John. Our love and prayers are sent to Nancy, the children and to the Koons family.
