It is with a heavy heart that the Longshore family says goodbye to the matriarch of our family. Joan Arick Longshore passed away on Friday, April 12th with her children by her side and the loving assistance of Avow Hospice. Joan was born in Elyria, Ohio December 30, 1932. She graduated from Kent State University and soon married Bill Longshore and moved to Naples where she resided for the next 70 years.
Though she was just Mom to us, she was an enthusiastic volunteer who was passionate about the development of Naples throughout the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Upon arriving in Naples, she joined the newly founded JC Woman’s Club. Her participation brought new life and spirit to the organization. She filled every chairmanship and office available. The 2 years she was president she organized the Jr. Deputy Debs, started a chapter of American Field Service, and spearheaded the building of Candy Cane City/Cambier Park. She promoted funds for Friends of the Library, The Humane Society, March of Dimes, Naples Cancer Drive, Community Concerts, The Art Association, The Hospital Service Leagues, and the Swamp Buggy Board.
She was a charter member and president of the JC Wives, member of Chi Omega Sorority and a member of St. Anne’s Choir. She taught for CCPS for 33 years. She was named Teacher of the year and Who’s Who of America and was very active in Collier County and Florida Education Associations. In 1965 she was awarded the Outstanding Citizen’s Award, becoming the youngest person and second woman to ever be so honored. The accolades continued throughout the years all while working full time and raising four active children. In 1972, her family was awarded the first and only Family of the Year award.
As her children grew, so did her involvement in their activities. She was instrumental in shaping many young women’s lives as team mom for the Naples Braves softball teams. She announced the play by play for the Naples High girls’ basketball and softball teams for 30 years. We would be remiss if we did not mention her Bunco Girls with whom she had a friendship of more than fifty years.
She is preceded in death by her husband Bill and daughter-in-law, Leslie. She is survived by her children: William “Bo” Longshore, Beth (Mark) Creel, Missy (Jack) Zeliff, Julie (Matt) Wichman. Grandchildren; Brian (Haven) Creel, Jamie (Charlie) Maurer, Billy Zeliff, Olivia Longshore, Kit Longshore, Max Wichman, Julia Wichman. Great Grandchildren; Sami Creel, Trace Creel.
Please join us in celebrating her life on Thursday April 18th at Hodges Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4-6 with a short service following.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation in her name to Avow Hospice of Naples.
